Zitat:TEHRAN (Reuters) - Iran's defense ministry said on Wednesday it had carried out a field test of the latest version of its Shahab-3 medium-range ballistic missile which defense experts say can reach Israel or U.S. bases in the Gulf.

Defense Minister Ali Shamkhani said last week Iran was working on improvements to the range and accuracy of the Shahab-3 in response to Israel's moves to boost its anti-missile capability.

A defense ministry spokesman confirmed a state television report that the test was carried out "to assess the latest developments implemented on this missile." He declined to give any further details.

TOUGH TALK

"If Israel behaves like a lunatic and attacks the Iranian nation's interests, we will come down on their heads like a mallet and break their bones," the ISNA students news agency quoted Revolutionary Guards Commander Yahya Rahim Safavi as saying on Wednesday.

Israel successfully tested its Arrow II anti-missile project in the United States last month. It was the seventh time the Arrow II had worked but the first time it had destroyed a Scud missile -- similar to the Shahab-3 -- in flight.

"The Israelis have recently tried to increase their missile capability and we will also try to upgrade our Shahab-3 missile in every respect," the ISNA students news agency quoted Shamkhani as saying last week.

He said the improvements to the Shahab-3 "will not be limited to the missile's range and will include all its specifications."

Zitat:Iranian 'Sputnik' Could Be Trojan Horse For Tehran's Ballistic Missile Program

by Aviation Week & Space Technology.
New York NY (SPX) Nov 29, 2004

Aviation Week & Space Technology reported in its November 29 issue that U.S. intelligence analysts are concerned about the planned launch from Iran, by early 2005, of an Iranian built satellite on an upgraded version of Tehran's largest ballistic missile, the Shahab-3.

The preparations for and launch of one or more Iranian satellite "is something that needs to be watched closely," a U.S. government missile analyst familiar with Iranian capabilities told AW&ST.

Such an "Iranian Sputnik" would elevate the stature of the Iran in the Middle East.

Tehran's satellite launch plans could also be a "Trojan Horse" to further advance ballistic missile or nuclear warhead related technologies, sources told the magazine.
...
Even if they fail initially, Iranian satellite launch attempts would help Iran develop both range and warhead improvements to the Shahab-3 missile under the cover of a civilian space program, AW&ST reports.

If the Iranians are successful with the space launch program, it will have political and technological ramifications in both the U. S. and Middle East. "It would move the Iranians from the junior varsity into the big leagues," an analyst told the magazine.

Zitat:'Iran working on secret missile programs'

LONDON, Dec 3 (IranMania) - Iran is developing new medium- and long-range missiles which can reach Western Europe and target US-led forces in Iraq, an Iranian opposition group claimed Thursday.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) said the new long-range missiles, the Ghadr and Shahab-4, had a planned range of 3,000 kilometers (1,900 miles) which would allow them to reach as far as Berlin.

It also said an upgraded version of the Zelzal missile could hit targets as far as 300 kilometers (190 miles) away with minute precision and was specifically designed for "offensive use" in foreign countries, notably against US-led multinational forces in Iraq.

One NCRI source, speaking anonymously, said North Korean and Chinese scientists were "definitely" helping the Iranian missile programs.

The NCRI, the political branch of the main Iranian armed opposition group the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq (MEK), or People's Mujahedeen, acknowledged that none of the missile programs it described actually contravened any international weapons agreement signed by Tehran.

Zitat:Tehran altering ballistic missile

By Andrew Koch JDW Bureau Chief Washington, DC

Robin Hughes JDW Deputy News Editor London

Additional reporting by Alon Ben-David, JDW Correspondent Tel Aviv

As the controversy over whether Iran is conducting a secret nuclear weapons programme gathers momentum, new details are emerging about Tehran's ballistic missiles likely to carry such weapons.

The mostly likely delivery system, a liquid-fuelled medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM), referred to in the US as the Shahab 3A, has been flight-tested several times in the past few months.

The Paris-based Iranian opposition group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), in London on 2 December, claimed that Tehran, under what it alleged to be a " wider clandestine programme," is developing a new medium-range ballistic missile called the Ghadr-101. US intelligence officials believe the Ghadr 101 is the same as the Shahab 3A.

However,Uzi Rubin, former director of Israel's Ballistic Missile Defence Organisation told JDW: "It appears that there are two competing teams in Iran working on its future medium-range ballistic missile. The version that was recently tested [in August] and presented in public already deserves the title Shahab 4, as it is completely different from the previous Shahab 3. Everything but the propulsion system was changed, the range was increased, as well as the re-entry vehicle."

The missile has a modified nose section allowing it to hold a larger warhead and thus provide additional room for a nuclear device. Israeli officials have said the larger nose section is capable of separation and visually appears similar to that used on the Russian SS-9 intercontinental ballistic missile. "It is not a copy of a known missile but the new Shahab has a major-league design. It's clear that it is the work of seasoned missile engineers, probably Russian, rather than an experimental beginners," version, added Rubin.

Such extra room is vital as Iranian nuclear engineers would face major technical challenges in making the country's first nuclear weapon light enough and small enough to fit on its existing missiles, particularly without benefit of having conducted full-scale nuclear weapons tests. The weapon is believed by US officials to be an indigenous design although knowledge gained from blueprints of a working, but too large nuclear weapon, provided by the Pakistani nuclear scientist AQ Khan would be helpful to the effort. If true, the efforts would signify that Iran is further advanced in its nuclear weapons programme than previously known.

Zitat:IRAN SEEKS MISSILE PARTS FROM U.S.

WASHINGTON [MENL] -- Iran continues to seek missile parts via the United Arab Emirates.

U.S. officials said Iran has established front companies in the UAE for the import of missile components from the United States. They said the Iran's state-owned Shahid Hemmat Industrial Group was behind the smuggling effort.

The FBI has arrested an Iranian-born businessman on charges that he illegally smuggled equipment for Iran's missile program. The indictment, released on Jan. 11, said Mohammad Farahbakhsh, 43, sent pressure sensors and other equipment from a Stamford, Conn. company to the United Arab Emirates.

From the UAE port of Dubai, the missile sensors were shipped to Iran. Farahbakhsh, a resident of Los Angeles, holds both Iranian and U.S. citizenship.

Zitat:CHINA PRODUCES MISSILES FOR IRAN

LONDON [MENL] -- China has launched marketing of missiles designed for Iran.

China's Hongdu Aviation Industry Group has exhibited three variants of two new guided missiles that were designed and developed for Iran. The anti-ship missiles, displayed at the China Air Show 2004 in November 2004, were identified as the JJ/TL-6B, JJ/TL-10A and KJ/TL-10B.

Industry sources said the Chinese missiles are identical to Iran's Nasr and Kosar, also known as the TL-6 and TL-10. They said brochures by the state-owned Iran Aerospace Industries Organization contain photographs of the Iranian missiles that were identical to those exhibited in China.

"It is now clear that two missile programmes revealed a few years ago by China National Aero Technology Import & Export Co (CATIC) - the FL-8 and FL-9 - were the TL-10 and TL-6, respectively, under yet another name," the London-based Jane's Defence Weekly reported.

Zitat:IRAN WORKS ON LONG-RANGE MISSILES

LONDON [MENL] -- Iran was said to have been developing a ballistic missile with a range of up to 3,000 kilometers.

The Iranian opposition has asserted that the Teheran regime was developing a surface-to-surface missile that could strike any European capital. The National Council of Resistance of Iran told a briefing in London that the new Iranian missile would be fitted with weapons of mass destruction payload.

The council identified the intermediate-range missiles as Ghadr 101 and Ghadr 110. The missiles were said to be comparable to the advanced Scud E and was being developed at the Hemmat Missile Industries Complex.

The Ghadr 101 was said to have a range of 2,500 kilometers, the council said. The Ghadr 110 has planned for a range of 3,000 kilometers.

So so, the Iranian opposition has......

Zitat:Iran uninterested in missile that can reach Europe: minister

TEHRAN (AFP) Feb 02, 2005
Iran's defence minister insisted on Wednesday that the Islamic republic was not seeking to develop a ballistic missile with a range greater than 3,000 kilometres (1,900 miles).

"Iran has the technical capacity to respond to its needs but does not need to make such a missile," Rear Admiral Ali Shamkhani was quoted as saying by student news agency ISNA.

"This is just Zionist propaganda," he said, when asked if Iran was seeking to boost its missile range to 3,000 kilometres -- and bring parts of eastern and southern Europe within range.

"There is no threatening target in Europe," Shamkhani added.

Zitat:IRAN RECEIVED LONG-RANGE CRUISE MISSILES

IRAN RECEIVED LONG-RANGE CRUISE MISSILES MOSCOW [MENL] -- Iran has received long-range cruise missiles from Ukraine.

Ukraine has confirmed that its X-55 cruise missile was exported to China and Iran around four years ago. Officials said that in 2001 Iran received 12 X-55 cruise missiles, a Soviet-origin weapon manufactured by Ukrainaviazakaz.

The X-55, also termed the Kh-55 or AS-15, was designed to carry a nuclear warhead. Officials said none of the missiles exported to either China or Iran contained a nuclear warhead. Six X-55 missiles were said to have been exported to China in 2000.

"The results of the investigation have revealed a criminal group that engaged in the illegal sales of armaments," Ukrainian Foreign Minister Borys Tarasyuk said. "It's an international group, and it comprises citizens from a wide range of countries."
