Das 3.000 ts verdrängende, 45 Jahre alte Schiff gehört zu den „High Endurance Cutter“ der HAMILTON-Klasse, von denen die USCG ursprünglich 36 Schiffe geplant hatte, dann allerdings zwischen 1967 und 1972 nur insgesamt zwölf erhielt. Für Küstenwachschiffe sind sie außerordentlich stark bewaffnet, verfügten ursprünglich sogar über ein 127-mm Geschütz als Hauptbewaffnung. Dieses wurde im Rahmen einer Modernisierung (DALLAS 1986-89) zwar durch ein 76-mm Schnellfeuergeschütz ersetzt, aber die Schiffe sind neben der Artilleriebewaffnung auch vorbereitet, kurzfristig acht Seeziel-FK Harpoon einzurüsten; bei fünf Schiffen geschah dies zwischenzeitlich sogar – seit 2001 allerdings nicht mehr. Dass ihnen im Kalten Krieg weitere, über bloße Küstenwachaufgaben hinaus gehende Rollen zugedacht waren, zeigt die anfängliche Ausrüstung auch mit Sonargeräten und U-Jagdtorpedos sowie Anbordnahme eines U-Jagdhubschraubers. Die U-Jagdausrüstung ist inzwischen allerdings demontiert.

Erst 2010/11 konnten die ersten Schiffe ausgemustert werden, wobei die DALLAS nach Typschiff HAMILTON und CHASE nun das dritte Schiff ist, auf dem die Dienstflagge eingeholt wurde. Die ... ex-HAMILTON wurde im letzten Jahr an die philippinische Marine übergeben und von dieser als GREGORIO DEL PILAR in Dienst gestellt. Auch die DALLAS soll noch in diesem Sommer an die befreundete südostasiatische Marine abgegeben werden.
