Official: 2 soldiers, 4 rebels killed in Peru

(CNN) — Two soldiers and at least four Maoist guerrillas were killed in a firefight Wednesday in western Peru, the nation’s defense minister said. In addition, several guerrillas were believed to be wounded but no soldiers were injured, said defense minister Rafael Rey.

The deadly confrontation occurred near the isolated Andean city of Huancavelica during an army operation against elements of the Sendero Luminoso guerrilla group — known in English as the Shining Path — Rey said in the state-run Andina news service. The soldiers were looking for Sendero leader Jorge Quispe Palomino, better known as “Comrade Raul.”
