The carrier version of the F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter took to the air for the first time on June 6, according to a June 7 Lockheed Martin announcement.
The 57-minute flight out of Lockheed's Fort Worth, Texas, facility came after a five-day delay due to wiring problems that were discovered during preflight checks, according to company officials. They described the problems last week as minor.
Last week, a senior Lockheed official said the F-35 flight test programs was three flights ahead of schedule for 2010, with 93 test sorties completed as of June 1.
This comes at the end of a traumatic spring for the F-35 program, which has been restructured following predictions of massive cost spikes and revelations that the program was two years behind schedule.....
