U.S., Israel close to deal on F-35 fighters

Deal would cover 19 airplanes
Decision due "any day

FARNBOROUGH, England, July 19 (Reuters) - The United States and Israel are days away from reaching an agreement on the sale of 19 Lockheed Martin Corp (LMT.N) F-35 fighter jets, which would be the first foreign military sale of the new warplane.

"The ball is in their court," Vice Admiral Jeffrey Wieringa, who heads the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency, told Reuters at the Farnborough Airshow.

"I am waiting for them to make a decision any day," said Wieringa, who is retiring at the end of the month.

Lockheed declined comment on the status of the arms deal, since it will be concluded between the U.S. and Israeli governments, but said the fact that Israel wants to buy the new F-35 fighter underscored global confidence in the jet.

Analysts say the deal is worth about $3 billion.

He declined to give any details on what specific radars and other equipment would be included with the F-35 fighters to be sold to Israel, which had expressed concerns early on about lacking access to some critical technologies for the plane.

One source familiar with the discussions said that in the end Israel had been satisfied with the level of technology included in the agreement.

Naja, mal abwarten ob das Gefeilsche endlich ein Ende hat.
Die genannte Zahl passt zu den israelischen Überlegungen in jüngerer Zeit nur eine sehr kleine Stealth Fighter Flotte zu unterhalten, nicht mehr als ein oder zwei Staffeln.

Was die Israelischen Eloka System angeht ist wohl eine Lösung über einen EW Pod im Gespräch:

Aus einer israelischen Rüstungsquelle war kürzlich zu erfahren, dass sich die USA und Israel in einigen heiklen Punkten beim F-35 Programm näher gekommen sind. Israel will, bevor eine erste Serie von F-35 Lightning II Kampfflugzeugen gekauft wird, sicher stellen, dass einige wichtige ELOKA Systeme komplett auf israelische Verhältnisse angepasst werden können. Die USA und Lockheed Martin können und wollen diese entscheidenden Elemente bei der Entwicklung des F-35 nicht aus der Hand geben und schlagen den Israelis nun vor, ihre Spezialwünsche in einem eigenen electronic-warfare-pod zu implementieren. Dieser Lösungsansatz könnte einen entscheidenden Durchbruch bei den Verhandlungen bringen und den Weg für den F-35 in Israel definitiv

Es erstaunt doch immer wieder wie weit man hier gehen will um die eigenes Basteleien in das Flugzeug zu integrieren.
Mit der doppelten EW Suit könnte man das Ding dann wohl als EF-35I beziechnen :lol:
