Bush budget forecasts dramatic growth in Navy

For the Navy and Marine Corps, which operate under a combined budget, the 2005 plan calls for just over $119 billion in spending, with additional cuts in the size of the fleet -- from 292 ships to 290 -- and the number of sailors and airmen -- from 373,800 to 365,900.

But while the current naval force will shrink, the budget would begin to pay for future growth. The administration wants to finance the construction of nine new ships next year, up from 7 in the current budget. And in 2009, the last year of the administration's plan, the construction forecast calls for 17 new ships.

Missile defense sees boost in Bush budget
WASHINGTON (AP) - National missile defense programs would receive a substantial spending boost in the Bush administration's proposed 2005 budget, with money to pay for the deployment of up to 20 interceptors in California and Alaska by the end of next year.
