Japan's Self-Defense Forces have begun major exercise … until 18 Nov in southwestern Japan (Islands near Okinawa) … about 34,000 personnel taking part … activities to include “defence of remote islands” … amphibious landings on the uninhabited atoll of Okidaitojima (400 km southeast of Okinawa) … live-fire exercises involving navy destroyers … for the first time deploy Type 88 coastal defence anti-ship missiles at both Okinawa and Miyako, effectively covering the Miyako Strait.
