In a statement on Friday, the WHO said that the recent outbreaks "are atypical, as they are occurring in non-endemic countries".

Erster Fall von Affenpocken in Deutschland
Die Infektionen mit Affenpocken bei Menschen häufen sich, bisher gab es nur in anderen Ländern bestätigte Fälle. Nun ist auch in Deutschland eine Infektion registriert worden. [...]
In Deutschland ist der erste Fall von Affenpocken bestätigt worden. Wie das Institut für Mikrobiologie der Bundeswehr am Freitag in München mitteilte, wurde das Virus am Donnerstag bei einem Patienten zweifelsfrei nachgewiesen. Der Patient habe die charakteristischen Hautveränderungen gezeigt. Weitere Details nannte das Institut zunächst nicht. [...] Seit Anfang Mai wurden in mehreren europäischen und nordamerikanischen Ländern Dutzende Verdachtsfälle und bestätigte Infektionen mit Affenpocken gemeldet. Nach ersten Patienten in Großbritannien meldeten auch Spanien, Portugal, Italien, Schweden und Frankreich sowie die USA und Kanada bestätigte Fälle und Verdachtsfälle.
»Es war nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis Affenpocken auch in Deutschland nachgewiesen werden«, teilte Bundesgesundheitsminister Karl Lauterbach zu dem Fall in Deutschland mit.
