Dass es in den USA ein massives Drogenproblem gibt, das steht außer Frage. Aber...
Drogen haben im Regelfall wenig mit einem religiösen Weltbild zu tun. Hinzu kommt, dass man es nur schwer auf einen Bevölkerungsteil eingrenzen kann - während die Opiod-Krise im Schwerpunkt in der weißen Mittelschicht der Vorstädte des Nordwestens ankam, kann man mittlerweile einen Anstieg v. a. in den ländlichen Gebieten feststellen - die tendenziell und traditionell eher eine tiefere religiöse Bindung bzgl. der lokalen Kirchengemeinde besessen haben als dies in anonymer aufgestellten Großstädten der Fall ist. (Zumindest hat die Zahl der Drogentoten in ländlichen Gebieten mittlerweile die in städtischen Arealen überflügelt). Hinzu kommt noch, dass es unterschiedliche Drogen gibt, die in einer jeweiligen Bevölkerungsgruppe, auch und gerade hinsichtlich der sozialen Schichtung, auftauchen.
Es ist jedoch schwer, hier hinsichtlich Religiosität eine genaue Einschätzung zu geben - im Bible Belt wird nicht mehr oder weniger Whisky getrunken als in Neuengland -, auch da die US-Bundesstaaten mit ihrer Informationspolitik etwas saumselig sind, wen es wie und wo genau trifft und welche Drogen im Umlauf sind:
Was allerdings der Fall ist - zumindest in sehr vorsichtiger Einschätzung -, ist, dass Süchtige im Rahmen einer Therapie bessere Chancen haben nicht rückfällig zu werden, wenn sie einen eher religiösen Hintergrund haben.

Kritik an den Maßnahmen der US-Behörden
In den USA stehen die Behörden in der Kritik, zu spät zu erfahren, welche Drogen aktuell populär werden und zu wenig Daten zu sammeln. Nabarun Dasgupta, ein Mediziner an der Universität von North Carolina, der Drogenproben aus dem ganzen Land sammelt, sagt: "Wir erfahren erst, was in den Straßendrogen drin ist, wenn es zu spät ist, wenn die Leute entweder tot oder verhaftet sind. Dasgupta sagt, die Polizei wisse oft nicht, welche Drogen überhaupt im Umlauf seien.
Jetzt rächt sich eine Politik in den USA, die sich vor allem auf die Strafverfolgung konzentriert hat: Wer mit harten Drogen erwischt wurde, kam ins Gefängnis. In die öffentliche Gesundheit wurde aber offenbar zu wenig investiert. Auch die Zusammenarbeit zwischen den Behörden sei schleppend. [...]
Aufgrund der besonderen Gefährlichkeit von Xylazin hat die Biden-Regierung Fentanyl, das mit Xylazin vermischt ist - also "Tranq", als "aufkommende Bedrohung" für die USA eingestuft. Das ist das erste Mal, dass Washington eine chemische Substanz auf diese Weise ins Visier nimmt.
Neben den Risiken einer Überdosis und der schädlichen Auswirkungen auf die Haut birgt Xylazin eine weitere Gefahr. Es ist kein Opioid - daher wirkt Naloxon nicht, das üblicherweise als Gegenmittel bei Opioid-Überdosen verwendet wird: "Der Anstieg von Xylazin ist besorgniserregend, es ist kein Opioid. Naloxon ist dadurch wirkungslos", betont Pooni Arunkumar, Leiterin des Gesundheitsamtes von Cook County, einem Bezirk in der Nähe von Philadalephia.
