Turkiye and Pakistan to Cooperate on Air-to-Air Missiles
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) released a statement on social media platform X with the announcement of technological cooperation on air-to-air missiles.
The technological cooperation will cover Turkiye’s GÖKDOĞAN and Pakistan’s ongoing FAAZ-2 BVRAAM projects. Pakistani GIDS’s FAAZ-2 missiles were revealed in the IDEF’23 defence exhibition held in Istanbul, Turkiye.
GÖKDOĞAN is being developed by TÜBİTAK SAGE as Turkiye’s indigenous BVRAAM alongside BOZDOĞAN missile as the short-range solution. The missiles are ready for acceptance tests as of the end of 2023.
Following GÖKDOĞAN and BOZDOĞAN, TÜBİTAK SAGE’s work on AAMs extended to ramjet-powered GÖKHAN missile’s development, expected to give a boost in range and kill probability thanks to the adjustability of ramjet engine’s thrust.

FAAZ-2 is a family of missiles with RF and IIR-guided variants, much like the French MICA family. The layout of the missiles follows a parallel with GÖKDOĞAN and AIM-120 AMRAAM. The range for both missiles was stated as 100 km in IDEF’23, and this might be subject to change for the guided variant because of heating from high-speed airflow.
Aside from aircraft launch, GIDS also plans to use FAAZ-2 as a surface-to-air missile, seemingly similar to the proposed SLAMRAAM concept based on the Humvee 4x4 vehicle.
