Zitat:Maritime superpower: China builds a mega-port in Peru and «out-boats» the competition
Since the Chinese started building a deep-sea port in the idyllic town of Chancay in Peru, nothing there has been the same. But resistance is growing – and not just locally. The U.S. is warning of military consequences.

Where four years ago there were a few pig stalls and the ruins of an old fishmeal factory, foundations are now being laid for a superlative port.
It will be 60 meters deep, perfect for ships up to 400 meters long, which transport 18,000 standard containers and are as big as China's hunger for raw materials. Such ships are too big for the new locks of the Panama Canal, through which XXL freighters cannot pass. The port's owner and operator is the state-owned COSCO, the fourth largest shipping company in the world, which is investing around $3.5 billion in Chancay.
Chancay is part of China's global trade strategy, which began in 2013 with the Belt and Road Initiative on the mainland and is now being continued at sea. In order to secure access to global markets, China is investing billions in ports and terminals.

The Chinese now want to conquer Latin American markets via Chancay, shipping e-cars, cellphones and cheap clothes – all of which are likely to sell like hotcakes to the around 200 million poor South Americans hungry for consumer goods.
Conversely, gas, fishmeal and minerals are to be exported from here, as well as raw materials that are important for the energy transition, such as copper and lithium.
