Turkish and Malian Presidents Discuss Security Cooperation
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Malian Transition President Colonel Assimi Goïta discussed cooperation on security in a phone call. Turkish President Erdoğan has reaffirmed the commitment to support Mali in its efforts to combat terrorism and facilitate stability. Mali's fight against terrorism took a major turn with the withdrawal from ECOWAS and the forming of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) with Burkina Faso and Niger.
The latter are also receiving military support from Turkiye in the form of 4x4 armoured vehicles, armed UAVs/UCAVs, and HÜRKUŞ light attack aircraft. Like its allies in the tri-lateral group, Mali has excluded any European, particularly French, military presence within its borders to combat external influence. ISGS is among Mali's central issues in counter-terrorism.
The radical group has conducted attacks on both military and civilian targets. Moreover, the terrorist group not only attacks Mali but also Burkina Faso and Niger as it operates in a region on the borders of three states.
