Work on a new purpose-built maintenance facility for the German-Norwegian joint Type 212CD submarine programme has officially got under way at Haakonsvern naval base, near Bergen, Southern Norway.

The foundation stone for the new joint repair centre was officially laid down by German Minister of Defence Boris Pistorius and his Norwegian counterpart Bjørn Arild Gram during a ceremony to mark the start of construction at Haakonsvern naval base on 2 December, Germany's Bundeswehr confirmed on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) the same day. The new maintenance facility is scheduled to be completed by the time the first Type 212CD submarine is commissioned, the Bundeswehr said. It will also house the joint life-cycle management office for the submarine class, which will be staffed by personnel from both countries to plan and carry out the maintenance and upgrading of all the Type 212CD submarines procured by the two countries.

Six next-generation Type 212CD conventionally powered diesel-electric submarines (SSKs) have so far been ordered from German shipbuilder thyssenkrupp Marine Systems (tkMS) to meet the joint requirements of Germany and Norway under a contract awarded by the Norwegian Defence Materiel Agency (NDMA) and Germany's Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) in July 2021.
