ABU DHABI [MENL] -- Oman has been discussing its role in the newly-expanded Gulf Arab military force.
Omani defense and military officials have held discussions with the Gulf Cooperation Council regarding the sultanate's contribution to the Peninsula Shield regional military force. The GCC has begun efforts to expand the size of the regional force from 5,000 to about 20,000 over the next few years.
So far, officials said, Peninsula Shield has expanded to nearly 9,000 troops over the last year. They said the impetus was the Peninsula Shield mission to protect Kuwait from Iraqi attacks during the U.S.-led war in March 2003.
Oman, along with the rest of the GCC, provided troops and military assets for the Peninsula Shield mission. Officials said the Omani contribution was one of the smallest in the GCC effort.
