TURKEY SEEKS 50 UTILITY HELICOPTERS
ANKARA [MENL] -- Turkey has launched an effort to acquire at least 50 combat helicopters.
Officials said Turkey has been examining offers from foreign contractors for Western utility helicopters. They said the platforms would include transport as well as naval anti-surface warfare air helicopters in the largest such procurement deal by Ankara.
The frontrunner in the Turkish project appears to be the U.S. defense firm, Sikorsky Aircraft. Officials said Sikorsky has offered more than 50 helicopters for nearly $1 billion.
"The requirement is there," a Turkish official said. "A key challenge would be the financing and help from the United States."
