France Launches Its First Horizon Class Frigate

France launched the Forbin, its first of the Horizon class of air defense frigates being built in cooperation with Italy, from DCN’s shipyard in Lorient on March 10.

A total of four 7,000-metric-ton Horizon warships — two for each navy — are being developed and built by Horizon SAS, a joint venture between France’s Armaris and Italy’s Orizzonte Sistemi Navali.

The Horizon program budget totals 3 billion euros ($4 billion), of which approximately one-third was spent on development of the combat system, said René Ambrières, Armaris’ vice president for strategy and cooperation.



Ambrières said Armaris and Orrizonte were in the final stages of negotiations for contracts on the multimission frigate, or Frégate Europeene Multi-mission (FREMM).
