Facing a March 31 deadline, Turkey and the United States are inching toward sealing a government-to-government contract for the upgrade of 80 Turkish F-16 fighter jets, government officials and industry sources said.
A Turkish procurement official said the deal would be inked before March 31, when a U.S. proposal for the upgrade program expires.
“Talks are progressing positively, with the last remaining technical details under discussion,” the official said. “Both sides aim to finalize the deal before the [March 31] deadline.”
The planned upgrade, which defense officials and industry sources estimate at close to $600 million, will include electronic warfare systems, advanced radar, integration of the modular mission computer, night vision goggles and various missile systems. System integration and testing, software development, test sets and support equipment, spare and repair parts, maintenance and personnel training also will be part of the deal.
