Boston is developing a plan to deliver medication to every person in the city within 48 hours of a bioterrorist attack, but the city is far more likely to lose people to flu, health officials said yesterday.
'People tend to deny that influenza is a really serious disease,'' said Dr. Susan Santos of FOCUS GROUP Risk and Environmental Management Consultants in Medford. 'We have to overcome that.''
Each year, flu kills about 36,000 people in the United States - more than 90 percent of them age 65 or older - and about 1 million worldwide, said Dr. Raymond Strikas of the Centers for Disease Control's National Immunization Program.
