Filibuster Deal Puts Democrats In a Bind
Pact May Hinder Efforts to Block High Court Nominee

Democrats' hopes of blocking a staunchly conservative Supreme Court nominee on ideological grounds could be seriously undermined by the six-week-old bipartisan deal on judicial nominees, key senators said yesterday.

With President Bush expected to name a successor to Justice Sandra Day O'Connor next week, liberals are laying the groundwork to challenge the nominee if he or she leans solidly to the right on affirmative action, abortion and other contentious issues

Zur Erklärung:
Ein Filibuster ist das Recht des Sentes bzw. vorallem der Minderheitsfraktion, eine Anstimmung so lange hinauszuzögern, wie sie will bei besonders strittigen Punkten um so einen Kompromiß zu erzwingen.
Und hier will die Minderheitsfraktion der Demokraten ( 44 Senatoren zu 55) die Ernennung eines neuen erzkonservativen Bundesrichters verhindern, nachdem ein erster Bundesrichter jetzt aufgehört hat.
Die Besetzung des Bundesgerichts ist deswegen so wichtig, da in den USA an den Gerichten sehr viel Politik gemacht wird ( wie man auch schon 2000 in Florida gesehen hat).
