Zitat:Germany to continue to use Uzbek airport for mission in Afghanistan
ALMA ATA, Aug. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Germany will continue to use the Termez airport in Uzbekistan to support its military mission in neighboring Afghanistan, German Defense Minister Peter Struck said Sunday.
"I was pleased to accept the offer to continue to use (Termez) airport," Struck told the press after meeting with his Uzbek counterpart Kadyr Gulyamov in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Struck said he and Gulyamov discussed security cooperation between their countries and agreed to enhance cooperation in military training.
Germany was ready to help Uzbekistan train mountain troops, andUzbekistan also asked for German assistance in training military pilots, he said.
After the start of the US-led war on Afghanistan in 2001, Uzbekistan had been providing bases and airspace for the coalitionforces.
About 200 German troops are deployed in the border town of Termez in southern Uzbekistan, while hundreds of US troops are stationed at another southern air base.
Struck stopped over in Tashkent en route to Kabul, where he will witness on Monday NATO's takeover of the command of the International Security Assistance Force from Germany and the Netherlands. Enditem
