Greek Cyprus has requested "precise" information from Turkey regarding its reported intention to explore for oil in the waters between Turkey and the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, Greek Cypriot Envoy Andreas Mavroyiannis said his country has seen reports that the Turkish Energy Ministry announced that the Turkish Petroleum Corporation (TPAO) will be conducting oil exploration activities along those shores.

He noted that Greek Cypriot tenders are being opened for exploration activities and that vessels engaged in survey activities related to the exploration of the seabed and the exploitation of its resources "will be deployed in waters near (the island of) Cyprus."
