<Kanwa News Aug 30, 2003> Latest sources from Taipei claim the Taiwan Defense Ministry is going to propose a new additional military budget of 700 billion Taiwan dollars (approximately US$20.384 billion) commencing from 2006 for the purchase of US-made weapons. The arms race at the Taiwan Strait region is expected to escalate, and a new round of military competition is about to start.
Taiwan's announcement of this decision at this particular timing aims not only at improving the Taiwan-US relation before the US general election but also urging the US to make favorable decision on the issue of large arms sales to Taiwan before the election. Another purpose of this move is to serve the needs of 2004 general election on the Island. Chen Shui-bian needs the votes of the military forces, which is very similar to Jiang Ze Min's practice of giving the military additional budget to purchase new weapon systems from Russia.
