Zitat:EGYPT IMPOSES SURCHARGE ON MILITARY SHIPS

CAIRO [MENL] -- Egypt has imposed a surcharge on ships that transport military equipment through the Suez Canal.

The regime of President Hosni Mubarak has decided to increase the rate of military ships that cross the Suez Canal by 25 percent. Officials said the surcharge was meant to pay for additional security and other measures meant to protect the military ships.

The surcharge was expected to most affect the British and U.S. militaries. The militaries have used merchant and other ships that cross the Suez Canal to bring supplies for their militaries in Kuwait and Iraq.

In 2003, Egypt significantly increased security for ships that supply the U.S.-led coalition in Iraq. Egypt's navy increased patrols in and around the canal and access to the canal was restricted.
