Über das Erscheinungsbild der B-21 gibt es nur wenige Details. Lediglich zwei Computerzeichnungen des künftigen Stealth-Bombers kursieren derzeit in der Öffentlichkeit – die erste stammt aus dem Jahr 2016, die zweite kam Anfang 2020 in den Umlauf. [...]

The Air Force had once projected the first flight of the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider would occur in December 2021, but the new bomber will not be ready to roll out until early next year for a flight in mid-2022, said the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office director, Randall Walden, according to a Jan. 15 story in Air Force Magazine. The RCO manages the B-21 program on behalf of the service.

Two B-21s are under construction at Northrop Grumman’s production facility in Palmdale, California. The first aircraft hasn’t made it to final assembly yet but is “really starting to look like a bomber,” Walden told Air Force Magazine. [...] Although information about the B-21 is notoriously limited, with many details of the Raider’s cost, appearance and capability classified, Walden offered a couple optimistic notes about the program’s progress.

Mit der B-21 Raider will die US Air Force ab Mitte der 2020er-Jahre ihre B-1B- und B-2A-Flotten schrittweise ersetzen. Bislang war bekannt, dass sich zwei Prototypen des Nurfluglers aktuell im Bau befinden. Nun ließ die Air Force durchblicken: es sind sogar drei mehr. [...] Schon im kommenden Jahr, voraussichtlich in der ersten Jahreshälfte soll der erste Prototyp der B-21 Raider in Palmdale zum Erstflug starten. Das Roll-out des Stealth-Bombers wird für Anfang 2022 erwartet. Und während der Rest der Welt noch nicht einmal genau weiß, wie der neue Bomber aussehen wird, weil es bis jetzt nur grobschlächtige Computerbilder zu sehen gab, scheint hinter den Toren der berühmt-berüchtigten Plant 42 am Palmdale Regional Airport in Kalifornien gleich eine ganze Armada von B-21 Form anzunehmen.

US Air Force wants manned-unmanned teaming for B-21

The US Air Force (USAF) wants its new Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider long-range strike bomber to operate with up to five unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in a manned-unmanned teaming (MUM-T) concept.

Frank Kendall, service secretary, said on 9 December that these UAVs would operate with [...] the B-21 as the operational tactics are to be determined. However, Kendall said the service wants to network the B-21 together with UAVs under the control of a pilot operator to be used in a formation against an enemy.

Six B-21s in Production, Fuel Control Software Already Tested

The B-21 Raider continues to be a “model” program for the Air Force, with six of the new bombers currently in production and some of its software already validated through digital testing, a top general at Air Force Global Strike Command said Feb. 9. Speaking at the 2022 Nuclear Deterrence Summit, Maj. Gen. Jason R. Armagost said the new stealth bomber will likely fly in 2022, echoing previous predictions by other Air Force officials. [...]

The nuclear modernization effort, however, does face one potentially significant hurdle, particularly for missiles such as the GBSD and the Long Range Standoff Weapon: the production of plutonium “pits” that go in the center of nuclear warheads.

The National Nuclear Security Administration had set a goal of producing 30 pits per year by 2026 and 80 by 2030. But, “I think NNSA will readily admit they’re not going to make that requirement,” Wolfe said.

First B-21 bomber enters ground testing, ‘on track for first flight’

ORLANDO, Fla. — The first B-21 Raider bomber has entered the ground test phase, paving the way for its expected rollout this year and subsequent first flight. [...] [Darlene] Costello said that with the start of testing on that B-21, “we are on track for first flight [and] we’re holding to our schedule.” She would not go into further detail on plans for the B-21.

In another roundtable with reporters at the conference, Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said he’s satisfied with the B-21′s progress so far. [...] During the ground test phase at Air Force Plant 42 in Palmdale, California, where Northrop is building the B-21, testers will turn the B-21′s power on, test its subsystems, test its structural integrity, and apply coatings and paint.

The next step will involve getting the B-21 ready for flight. This includes carrying out engine runs as well as low-speed and then high-speed taxiing. After that, the actual first flight from Plant 42 to Edwards Air Force Base in California will take place. Formal flight testing will be held at Edwards.

New B-21 Raider Being Accelerated With Overlapping Development and Production

The Air Force is accelerating the B-21 program, Northrop Grumman President and Chief Executive Officer Kathy Warden told reporters on a quarterly earnings call. The Air Force apparently permitted Northrop to discuss more of the highly classified program’s progress than in recent years.

Warden, talking with financial reporters April 28, said “the government is looking at layering” production of the Raider “on top of” its development phase. [...] Moreover, costs for full-rate production aircraft “have yet to be negotiated,” said David Keffer, Northop Grumman’s executive vice president and chief financial officer.

As for the production phase, “you can think of that as notionally around the ’25-’26 timeframe—he middle part of the decade,” Warden said. Air Force budget documents released earlier in April show the Air Force will spend $20 billion to build B-21s over the five-year future years defense plan. [...] Under the initial 2015 contract, LRIP will include 21 aircraft in five lots. Warden confirmed that the B-21’s cost will come in under the Air Force’s initial ceiling production unit cost of $550 million in 2010 dollars. The last time the Air Force officially re-set the figure was in 2019, she said, when it was “a little over $600 million” average procurement unit cost. Using the CPI escalation method from 2010, it would be $741.69 million today.

B-21 Raider First Flight Now Postponed to 2023

Without explanation, the Air Force now says the first B-21 bomber will not make its first flight until 2023, pushing back at least six months from the previously expected timetable.

“Recently, the Air Force released a new estimate for first flight; projected for next year, 2023,” a service spokeswoman said May 20. The service said it’s trying to be as “transparent” as it can be about the project, and “this estimate reflects the current status of the program.” She did not attribute the delay to any particular cause. Many other high-profile programs, such as Boeing’s T-7A trainer, have recently reported delays due to supply chain issues and labor shortages. [...]

Rapid Capabilities Office director Randall Walden predicted in early 2021 that the B-21 would fly in “mid-2022,” and in March said that the first flyable example was largely assembled and undergoing outdoor calibration tests. These, he said, would be followed by taxi tests and first flight, but he did not give a timetable. [...] The Air Force plans to spend nearly $20 billion on producing the B-21 during the future years defense plan running from fiscal 2023 through fiscal 2027, and another $12 billion on research and development for the program during that same period, for a total of $32 billion over the FYDP. The B-21 will succeed the B-1B and B-2 bombers now in service, but the exact dates of those turnovers has been walked back in recent years.

Einen Einblick hinter die Türen der berüchtigten Plant 42 in Palmdale und das Wissen darüber, wie die B-21 genau aussieht, haben bis jetzt nur diejenigen, die an dem Projekt selbst mitarbeiten. Das jedoch wird nicht mehr lange so bleiben: Am Dienstag bestätigte die Air Force, sie plane den Rollout des neuen Bombers für Ende des Jahres, genauer in der ersten Woche im Dezember. Das teilte der Beschaffungschef der US-Luftwaffe Andrew Hunter bei der Air Force Association’s Air Space Cyber Konferenz mit. [...] Charles Q. Brown Jr., Generalstabschef der Luftwaffe, spricht aber bereits jetzt von einem "magischen Moment" für die US-Luftwaffe. Dies auch deswegen, weil es die erste Bomber-Vorstellung seit 34 Jahren sein wird. Zuletzt fand im November 1988 der Rollout der B-2 Spirit statt.

Trotz publikumswirksamer Präsentation beim Rollout sind bislang nur wenige Einzelheiten über den Tarnkappenbomber B-21 Raider an die Öffentlichkeit gedrungen. Jetzt hat die U.S. Air Force zwei weitere Aufnahmen des Flugzeugs veröffentlicht, die mehr über das Flugzeug verraten. [...] Die Bühne blieb nur spärlich beleuchtet, dazu wurde eine Nebelmaschine angeworfen und Fotoaufnahmen gab es nur aus einer einzigen Perspektive. Teilnehmer mussten ihre Kameras und Smartphones vor Beginn der Veranstaltung abgeben. [...]

Sie zeigen den Bomber einmal in einer Nahaufnahme, das andere Mal aus einer erhöhten Position. Vor allem dieses Foto gibt Details über die B-21 preis, die bisher verborgen blieben und sich bestenfalls erahnen ließen. [...] Da sind vor allem die Triebwerke: Schwarze Abdeckungen verhindern zwar noch den Blick in die trapezförmigen Triebwerkseinläufe. Aber dennoch lässt sich sagen: Die Einlassfläche wirkt überraschend klein, ihre Oberkante scheint in der Mitte zurückversetzt zu sein und bildet so in der Draufsicht eine L-Form.
