With growing interest in USSOCOM potentially acquiring an amphibious C-130J floatplane, or an actual seaplane, the top in-service seaplane contender with a “ship hull belly” remains the Japanese Maritime Self Defense Forces’ (JMSDF) ShinMaywa US-2, a four-engine propeller seaplane with the primary role of Search and Rescue (SAR), contingency operations, and Humanitarian Disaster Relief.
