France is set to use Britain's design for the Royal Navy's two new aircraft carriers to build its own carrier, paving the way for industrial co--operation between the two nations.
An industry report, due to be submitted to the two governments tomorrow, concludes that the French could adopt the design being used to build Britain's carriers with some modifications.
French agreement to use Britain's design is being seen as a vital step towards possible co-operation between the two nations on the construction of the carriers and could lead to substantial cost savings.
The report, compiled by British and French defence contractors including BAE Systems and Thales, is understood to analyse the risks and benefits of two possible options: sharing the procurement of equipment such as engines or joint construction of the ships...
